Materials, Grading, Class Work, and Attendance

Materials

bullet Textbook GEOMETRY, Third Edition, by Harold Jacobs, 2003
bullet Scientific Calculator (B, cos, sin, tan, etc.)
bullet Compass (available in Book House)
bullet Ruler - (centimeter and inches)
bullet Protractor
bullet Paper (loose-leaf or graph paper, no notebooks please)

Procedure

  1. A good share of the class time will be given to presenting the new lesson for the day.
  2. Time will also be allowed for questions on the previous day's assignment.
  3. Occasionally there will be a quiz covering material from the previous class(es) and home work assignments
  4. Homework will be corrected and collected two days after the day it was assigned. This allows you to work the problems the first night, ask questions the next day in class, finish those problems on which you had questions and hand in the assignment the third day.
  5. Several projects demonstrating geometry in the world around us will also be completed by the students.
  6. Regular work in Geometer's Sketchpad, a dynamic software program used for discovery and presentation of geometric concepts, will be done at least once or twice each chapter. You will enjoy GSP's versatility and helpfulness in learning geometry concepts.

Grading

The letter grade you earn for your report card is based upon the percentages earned in several areas of work. The areas of work will be weighted in the following way (this weighting may change as the year progresses):

  • class work/quizzes 5%

  • selected daily work 15%

  • Geometer's Sketchpad work 15%

  • projects 10%

  • chapter tests 40%

  • semester exam 15%

Your letter grades will be determined according to the following percentages:

93-100% A 80-83% B- 67-69% D+
90-92% A- 77-79% C+ 64-66% D
87-89% B+ 74-76% C 60-63% D-
84-86% B 70-73% C- 0-59% F
