Computer Science - CS101

Computer Science 101 meets three days a week for one semester. The course will familiarize the student with important concepts dealing with the architecture, function, maintenance, and application of a personal computer. The individual components of the course may change due to the dynamics of the computer industry, but the overall content of the course will continue to provide the student with the basic understanding of what a computer is and what it can do for an individual to increase productivity. We hope to provide the student with the background he or she will need to function in the world of computers which will undoubtedly permeate our lives in the years to come.

The list below includes the topics to be covered in this course. The number following each main topic represents the number of class periods intended for that topic. List is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.

Each of the above topics will be presented through online research, projects or class presentation. Students will determine how best to represent their capabilities in and understandings of the covered topics. Completion of course projects represents 45% of the course grade.

Completed coursework will be saved in a network folder and presented in the student's portfolio website as 1) a web page 2) an Adobe Acrobat PDF document 3) a Corel Presentations slide show 4) digital photos 5) an mpeg video 6) a link to an external website 7) a screen capture or 8) any other method possible. This portfolio web site will be developed as part of the course and added to as projects are completed. The portfolio will represent 50% of the course grade.

The course grade will be determined as follows:

Completion and Accuracy of Projects 60%
Portfolio Web 40%
