GAMBLING (1)
Next week has been designated as "National Problem Gambling Awareness Week." The purpose of this is to, as they say, "raise awareness of the consequences of problem gambling and the resources available for individuals whose gambling is causing disruption in their lives." There are two issues that they want to address: the consequences and the resources.  This approach to such problems is the way of the world and for the world it serves a purpose.
But what about us?  How do we approach the problem of gambling?  Note that I did not speak of "problem gambling," as though there were such a thing as "non-problem gambling." Rather, I said "the problem of gambling," meaning that all gambling is a problem.  Of course, the more one indulges in it, the greater the problem becomes for him.
So how do we approach the matter?  Do we start by warning people of the consequences?  This is like going to the end of the problem and trying to solve it from there.  Is it not better to start at the beginning?
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."  So there you have it.  "Have what?" you say.  Have this: "The earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein."  (Ps.24:1)  God created all things.  Therefore, all things belong to God.  If we do not begin with this truth, we will go nowhere.
If all things belong to God, then it is God, who decides how everything is supposed to be used. "The LORD kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up.  The LORD makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up.  He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory.  'For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, And He has set the world upon them.'"  (1 Sam. 2:6-8)
If we can realize this, that we are only stewards, caretakers, custodians, managers of God's property, then we will realize that He is the Master and we are the servants.  The Master decides on the disposition of His property, but as for us, we merely carry out His wishes.  So it is that we go back to the beginning of everything -- everything that is used for gambling — the beginning of all material things.                 -Prof. John Pfeiffer (Chapel 3/5/10)

The first basketball team was organized by Ron Roehl. Contributions from two CLC congregations paid for gym rental, 10 basketball uniforms at $5 each, and 4 basketballs. The uniforms were worn by both teams at every game and dry-cleaned infrequently.

We still need volunteers for the "WELCOME TO ILC" booth during the Grade School Tourney this week-end. Please email john.pfeiffer@ilc.edu or leave your name at the office if you are willing and available to serve.
